Tartan Websites

About

Run by an engineer who builds websites

Tartan is run by a civil engineer (P.Eng.) who spent her first career at Shell Canada before she started building websites for small businesses.

Why construction

We know what a drawing set is for

Most web designers have never read a set of drawings or sat through a safety meeting. We have. We know what a builder does all day, and we know what a buyer wants to see before they call.

That shows up in the work. The site names the trade in the words a customer searches for. It shows the finished jobs, the towns, and the coverage. It loads on a phone on one bar of signal. It asks for the job, the address, and the timeline, and nothing else.

It also shows up in how we run a build. One meeting. One list of changes. One person who says yes. Four weeks from deposit to launch.

Why fixed prices

An hourly rate punishes the person who is good at the work

Get faster and earn less, or pad the timesheet. Neither one serves you. So every Tartan build has a fixed price and a written list of what it includes.

If a job takes us longer than we expected, that is our problem. If it takes less, that is our reward for having built the same thing many times before. You pay the number on the quote either way.

You price your jobs the same way. You would not take a kitchen renovation on an open timesheet, and you should not take a website on one either.

The standard

Six things every Tartan site gets

  • The number is the number

The price on the written quote is the price you pay. Scope changes get a new number in writing before anything is built.

  • You own all of it

Code, domain, content, and every account, in your name from the first day. Leaving is easy on purpose.

  • It loads on site

Pages are built static and served from the edge. No page builder, no plugin to update, no database to break at midnight.

  • Measured, not guessed

Contrast is measured. Keyboard navigation is tested. Every page carries schema markup, so Google reads it the way a customer does.

  • We say no when we should

If a few changes to your current site will do the job, we quote those. If the plan will not work, we say so before you have paid for it.

  • One person, start to finish

The person who reviews your site writes the copy, builds the pages, and answers the email. There is no handoff and no account manager.

Why Tartan

Two bands cross and lock, and the cloth holds

A tartan is a weave. Two bands cross, lock, and hold. Every choice in the brand comes back to that: two colors, one crossing, square edges softened only at the ends, and copy that says the thing once.

A builder's website works the same way. Your work and your word cross in one place a customer can find. The site holds when the referral runs out, when the crew changes, and when the next job depends on what a stranger finds on their phone.

We are based in Armstrong, BC, and we build for the North Okanagan and the Shuswap. The first meeting happens on your site, not ours.

Send us the site you have now.

We send back what we would fix, what we would build, and what it costs. In writing, within 1 business day.
